perfectday
To start the day with a true American tradition, try the breakfast at Lou Mitchell's restaurant. The place may look a little worn but that is what gives it its character. The staff are friendly, the food is superb, and believe me, the portions are very generous. If you then want to burn off some of the morning's indulgence, walk east to one of Chicago's most amazing venues: Millennium Park. Stroll through and check out the Lurie Garden, Cloud Gate and the massive sculpture we affectionately call 'The Bean'. Enjoy the serenity of the great lawn with the Jay Pritzker Pavilion just north of you. This is where locals and tourists alike come with their blankets, chairs and picnic baskets to listen to the many free concerts held there.
Unlike many cities, Chicago's waterfront has been kept total park land. The city prides itself of its beautiful parks. If you go to Navy Pier you will see many people jogging and cycling along the lakefront taking in the sound of the waves cascading against the shore. To take in some of the local color, rent a bike and join the Chicagoans biking, jogging and skating to and from work. The lakefront has eighteen and a half miles of paved paths. Bike Chicago, 600 E Grand Street, +1 800 915 BIKE, rents bicycles by the hour or the day, with
complimentary locks and safety gear.
Rather than an evening show or just visiting a downtown restaurant, stray off a little north or south and experience what Chicago was first known for: the wonderful Blues and Jazz scene. There are many atmospheric spots scattered all over town and each one has its own special essence. I personally love the Backroom up by the Rush and Division neighborhood there is also Checkerboad Lounge, Kingson Mines, The Green Mill or Andy's, all have an infectious Chicago mood that will leave you snapping your fingers into the wee hours of the morning.
