LOCAL CULTURE

CLOTHING

Ensure to pack plenty of light clothing. Puerto Rico enjoys a summer tropical climate. Temperatures average 82 degrees Fahrenheit during winter months and 85 degrees Fahrenheit in summer.

ELECTRICITY

Voltage (110 volts, 60 cycles AC) is the same as on the Continental United States.

EVENING ATTIRE

Even though Puerto Rico is a tropical island, there is an evening dress code which is usually casual yet elegant. Most places do require long pants and button down, collar shirts for gentlemen, and no beach wear at night time. The same applies for ladies: skirts, blouses, dresses, slacks but no shorts. Dress jeans are acceptable.

LANGUAGE

Puerto Rico's languages are Spanish and English. While Spanish is the island's primary language, English is widely spoken, particularly in the tourist areas.

RELIGION

You will find most religious denominations have English services on weekends. Predominantly, Puerto Rico has a large Catholic population.

DID YOU KNOW?

Bioluminescent Bays

Puerto Rico is the only place in the world you can visit three brilliant biobays as we house the 'Phosphorescent Bay' at La Parguera, 'Las Croabas Bay' and 'Mosquito Bay'.

El Yunque Tropical Rainforest

This is the only rainforest that belongs to the United States. A must when visiting Puerto Rico. Enjoy hiking and swimming at La Mina Falls trail.

Old San Juan, the Fortress City

An ancient city built during the colonial period. Two Forts, El Morro and San Cristobal, city squares, enclosed by the ancient city walls and preserved by the U.S National Parks Service. Enjoy restaurants, clubs, art galleries, jewellery stores and Museums. An ideal place to wander in wonder.

Ponce City

A true gem of our island, enjoy walking the City Square, Parque De Bombas, (oldest fire house museum) and the Ponce Cathedral. Driving time approximately one and a half hours from our capital through the mountain region.

Rio Camuy Caves Park

This incredible park has extraordinary subterranean caverns carved out by the Camuy River over a million years ago. Lovely trails gently descend through a lush ravine to the awe-inspiring caverns below.

WHAT TO PACK?

Currency

US Dollars.

Gambling

Casinos are located in many of the large hotels. Most open at noon and close at 4am daily. Dress is generally informal, although slacks and a collared shirt are preferable for men in the evening. Only those 21 and over are permitted.

Getting Around

Taxis are readily available within most parts of Puerto Rico. Driving is like that in the mainland U.S. Distances are marked in kilometers (one km. equals 0.6 miles). A valid American state-side driver's license is legal to use in Puerto Rico, so car rentals are a great way to get around.

Sun Protection

Even though most visitors may be accustomed to the sun, Puerto Rico's sun is much stronger than in the USA. Please ensure that you apply plenty of sunscreen protection and hydrate properly.
