insidertips
Biodiversity
In 1996 the Mexican government established the Cozumel Reefs National Marine Park. Please help us to preserve the reefs and do not touch, remove, collect, feed, or harm any marine organism.
Culture
Cozumel is a very safe place. You can walk around late at night without worrying about your security.
Food
Local restaurants will usually offer's Habanero sauces or dips. If you are not used to spicy food, be careful! This stuff is very, very hot.
Language
Cozumel is one of many places on the Yucatan Peninsula where you might hear locals speaking in Mayan rather than Spanish. If you would like an introductory lesson on this ancient language, the Concierge can arrange it.
Taxis
Remember always to agree the cost of your journey before getting into a taxi.
Mayans
The Mayans considered Cozumel sacred to Ixchel, the Mayan moon goddess, and the island was a place of pilgrimage, particularly for women in search of fertility. At the sites of ancient temples, archaeologists often uncover the small dolls that were once offered in sacrifice as part of the fertility rituals.
Private Transportation.
If you are an Ambassador you are able to ask for our private transportation to pick you up at the airport with a very low cost.
Sea Turtles
Every year, thousands of sea turtles arrive on Cozumel's eastern coast in order to lay their eggs. A sanctuary is in operation to protect the nests of this endangered species. The island also has one of the world's most beautiful coral reefs.
Clothes
Bring a light sweater. Some places can get quite chilly because of air-conditioning.
Mosquitoes
To prevent mosquito bites or sand flies, in this rainy season we highly recommend the use of repellents throughout your stay. Please use it at all times even when on the beach (greater care from 6 am to 8 am and 6 pm to 8 pm). For your convenience you will find a biodegradable repellent provided by our resort.
Money
US dollars are accepted at most places on the island, but sometimes it can be hard to get your change back in the same currency. If you're bringing dollars, it makes sense to have a lot of them in low-denomination bills. Please contact the Front Desk if you want to change some currency.
Sun protection
Don't forget to pack sunblock or some good tanning lotion.
Surfing lessons
Have you always wanted to learn how to surf, hang ten, and ride the waves? Cozumel is the ideal place to learn, with it's soft rolling waves, and large undeveloped beach. Allow international surf champion, Nacho Gutierrez, to safely show you the basics and hang 10 on a surf board!
