insidertips
Cuisine
The essential ingredients of Yucatecan cuisine are sauces and condiments such as the achiote, a native spice used for seasoning meat and fish. The most traditional dishes are lime soup and tikinxic fish. Be aware of the habanero chilli (the hottest of all chillis!).
Drinks
The most traditional alcoholic drink in Mexico is Tequila. It is served in small glasses called "caballito" and comes in three different versions: white - blanco, aged - reposado, and old - anejo and should be ordered along with lime juice and sangrita, a special beverage made of tomato.
The traditional drink of Yucatan peninsula is the Xtabentum , an alcoholic drink made with honey.
Exchange money
The local currency is Mexican pesos, remember to buy pesos at exchange desks at the airport or at the Front Desk. Please note that as per Mexican law, you can only exchange up to 1,500 US dollars in cash per month.
Tours
Only book tours through known agencies. Make sure the ticket has the name of the company, its phone numbers, address, folio number and hours. The travel agencie at the Hotel will always be the most reliable one.
Payments
Don't forget there is a departure tax payable at the airport. The amount can be covered in pesos or US dollars, only cash is accepted.
City
Cancun is located in the state of Quintana Roo, on the east coast of the Yucatan Peninsula. It is divided into two areas: Hotel Zone, between the lagoon and the sea, and downtown Cancun.
Traditional eating
Modern Mexican cuisine is the result of the fusion of two cultures: Pre-Hispanic and Spanish. The Xtabentum is the traditional drink served in Cancun and is a liqueur made in Yucatan, from rum, aniseed and honey produced by bees from the nectar of Xtabentun flowers.
Moving around Cancun
You can take the regular bus to move around the Hotel Zone and downtown any time of the day. It is safe and cheap. The bus drivers are very friendly and will help you to find your stop.
Cellular Phone Charger
If you are planning to bring your cellular phone, do not forget your charger. In Mexico we have 110 watts in electricity.
Clothing and accessories
We recommend you wear insect repellent if you take a tour to any of the eco-theme parks, archaeological sites and caverns. You should use biodegradable sunscreen at the eco-theme parks. Be aware of the rainy season from June to November and that Cancun has a very warm and humid climate. Make sure to bring light clothing to wear during day time as well as formal clothing for the evening as it might be requested at some restaurants or discos.
