LOCAL CULTURE

Expression

Greeks express themselves with hand gestures when they are talking and generally speak in a high tone of voice. Most Greeks speak a foreign language, usually English.

DINNER

In order to enjoy the full atmosphere of a restaurant, we suggest that the earliest you dine is 9.30pm.

Taxis

Taxi ranks are available in most central squares; however, you can flag down a taxi on the street and perhaps even share one with another passenger. Be sure that the meter is running when entering the taxi.

Tipping

Tipping is not mandatory, but is a gesture of satisfaction with services rendered. On average, 10 per cent on a restaurant or bar bill is offered.

DID YOU KNOW?

Athens Metro

During the construction of the Metro, many ancient artefacts were discovered which are now on display in some stations. Syntagma Station has the most impressive collection of all.

Dionysos Theatre

This was the first theatre constructed of stone in Greece, built at the end of the 5th century BC. All the famous ancient writers had their plays performed in this theatre.

Panathinaiko Stadium

The Panathinaiko Stadium is the only stadium in the world built of pure white marble and is the official finish line of the classical marathon race.

The InterContinental art collection

The Athenaeum InterContinental Athens features an extensive collection of contemporary painting, sculpture and photography by Greek artists.

WHAT TO PACK?

Non-slip walking shoes

Most of the ancient sites are accessed by marble steps. For your safety, be sure to wear non-slip walking shoes.

Sun protection

Be sure to pack sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses, which are necessary all year round.

Swimming

From April to October, the weather in Greece is very good and suitable for swimming. You will find a clean and sandy beach not only on the islands but near the city. So pack a swimsuit.
